Dr. Debra Powell PhD, PAS, CESMT, CCMT, CAC, CAA is a native of Charleston, SC. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in Biological Science from Hampton University, a master’s degree from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, and a PhD from the University of Kentucky, both in Equine Exercise Physiology and Nutrition. Since 1999, Dr. Powell has owned and operated Powell’s Equine and Canine Therapeutic Services (PECTS) that specializes in non-invasive therapies and nutritional consulting. She works with local, national, and international clients. She has had two opportunities to work on horses at the Summer Olympic Games, once in Atlanta and the other in London. Dr. Powell joined the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods family in 2015 as the Assistant Professor of Equine Studies. In this role, she is responsible for course instruction in the equine sciences, some of which include nutrition, health and disease, genetics, reproduction, equine anatomy and physiology, and equine exercise physiology, as well as having an academic advisory role.
Dr. Powell is a member of several professional associations including Equine Science Society, American
Society of Animal Science, the National Association of Equine Affiliated Academics, and the Association
of Chartered Physiotherapists, United Kingdom, to name a few. She has been a presenter and invited
speaker at professional conferences in the US and abroad, covering topics in the fields of equine
nutrition, equine exercise physiology, and horse injury and rehabilitation. She has published several
articles related to her area of research in various scientific journals. Her new textbook, Anatomy and
Physiology of the Equine Digestive System, Just Facts…No Fillers, has now been released into
publication. Dr. Powell also writes a monthly column, Equi-tech, for an international magazine, Arabian
Finish Line. This column features a variety of articles ranging from current alternative therapies to
nutrition to health management for the horse. In her spare time, Debra enjoys spending time riding her
horses and relaxing with her dog and cats at home.
